The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has excluded Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been ruled out of Mumbai's 16-member squad for their 2025–26 Ranji Trophy opener because of recurring back pain and stiffness. The MCA also announced that the match will be played under the leadership of new captain Shardul Thakur, following Ajinkya Rahane’s resignation in August.

T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav will not be playing in Mumbai’s 2025–26 Ranji Trophy opener due to a six-month break from red-ball cricket allowed by the BCCI. He already missed the Duleep Trophy due to a quad injury. Yadav debuted for Mumbai’s domestic cricket in 2010 and has scored over 2200 runs in 33 Ranji matches at an average of 41.60. Remarkably, he was the top scorer for Mumbai in the 2011–12 season with 754 runs in 9 matches. His outstanding performance earned him the MA Chidambaram Trophy for the Best Under-22 Cricketer.
