India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has thrown his full support behind young Test captain Shubman Gill, emphasizing his role in shielding the 25-year-old from criticism as he navigates leadership challenges. Speaking to Star Sports during the ongoing second Test against West Indies in New Delhi, Gambhir praised Gill’s composure in high-stakes situations.
“I want to see how he (Shubman Gill) reacts when things don’t go his way, whether personally or from the team’s point of view,” Gambhir said. “I’m always there to support him, back him, and protect him. My job is to take all the pressure off him. I’m ready to take all the criticism for him as long as he’s doing the right things for the team and is completely transparent and honest with the players inside the dressing room.”
Gill, who took over as Test captain after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, led India to a gritty 2-2 draw in England earlier this year, scoring 754 runs despite losing all five tosses. Gambhir highlighted Gill’s ability to stay calm: “I don’t think I’ve seen a single moment where he showed that frustration or pressure on his face... Led with a smile, 25 days of intense cricket.”
The coach’s comments come as India dominates West Indies, following an innings victory in the first Test in Ahmedabad. In Delhi, Gill won his first toss in seven attempts, sparking light-hearted team banter. Gambhir’s protective stance has resonated with fans, with social media posts praising the duo’s bond as a cornerstone for India’s youthful squad.
With Gill also named ODI captain for the upcoming Australia series, Gambhir’s mentorship will be key as the young leader faces mounting expectations.
